Platinum is a dense, malleable, ductile, unreactive Precious silvery metal. It is an extremely rare metal and the group of 6 of the rarest elements are named after it. South Africa accounts for 80% of its mined production. It is so rare that only a few hundred tons of it are produced annually. It is a noble metal because it has one of the least reactive nature and superb resistance to corrosion. It is used among other things for Catalectic converters, medical instruments, electrodes, dentistry equipment, jewelry and even in Bullion bars. Many investors as well as the one writing this, think it is undervalued, currently at around $1240 per Oz. In 2008 it was nearly worth double, but because there was a scandal with VW and other car makers concerning diesel cars, the Platinum price dropped as its cousin Palladium is used in Petrol engine cars.
